Abstract

The study is based on the idea that disability is a condition shaped by an unfavourable environment, and aims to guide the Municipality of Cecina in designing an accessible and inclusive urban environment. Through literature review and sector legislation, the research defines strategic guidelines for Urban Ergonomics, focusing on accessibility, removal of barriers, urban furnishings and wayfinding.

The LED study provides design guidelines to improve mobility, reduce perceptive barriers, and enhance usability of pedestrian, cycle, and country paths, as well as criteria for street furniture and inclusive wayfinding systems.

The project is structured in six phases: development of guidelines for accessibility for all and the citadel of sport; definition of inclusive sports functions for elderly, disabled and children; collaboration on inclusive cultural spaces inspired by wellness concepts; strategies for soft urban mobility (bike sharing, paths, parking); creation of an intelligent information system with smart lampposts and sensors for safety and services; and the “Games for Everyone” initiative.

The Ergonomics & Design Laboratory (LED) contributes with scientific expertise and technical support, promoting a human-centred approach that considers evolving lifestyles, user needs, and increased life expectancy, placing people and environment at the core of urban design.
