Abstract

The project focused on the development of innovative solutions aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the food system, particularly during the use phase. The main objective was to redefine domestic kitchen scenarios by placing at the center not only aesthetics, functionality, and economic development, but also respect for people and the environment.

The contribution of the Ergonomics & Design Laboratory (LED) was based on a human-centred design approach, analysing users’ needs and expectations to identify new typological and technological innovations for kitchen systems, components, and related services. These innovations were designed to encourage more sustainable lifestyles and food habits, promoting energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible consumption.

The research guidelines were tested through the workshop “Well-Living in Kitchen: Technological and Usage Innovation in Kitchen Environment.” The workshop involved undergraduate and graduate design students in an experimental process called Creativity@Factory, hosted within the Effeti company. Young designers worked directly with university researchers, professors, and production technicians, creating concepts that expanded the kitchen product range beyond accessories and aesthetics, focusing instead on different users and housing needs.

The workshop generated highly innovative concepts in four main areas: smart tables, wall and furniture systems, wearable accessories, and smart flooring solutions, all aimed at improving sustainability, usability, and everyday living experiences.
